Yulia Yagunova
Russian-born pianist Julia Yagunova has built an international career that reflects the global spirit of today’s jazz. From her studies in the United States to her years as a resident performer in China, and later her teaching in New Zealand, Yagunova’s path shows how music connects cultures across continents.
After completing her master of music with honours in jazz studies performance at the University of Central Oklahoma in 2014, Yagunova moved to Shanghai. There, she became a resident pianist at the legendary JZ Club, one of Asia’s most influential jazz venues. For four years, she performed almost nightly, collaborating with international vocalists and ensembles. She also played with groups including the funk band Funkky Shuz and the pop band Lucky, while appearing at festivals and clubs throughout China.
Her earlier background in Russia included work with blues and jazz ensembles such as Blues Encore, Nasty Habits and Jazz Friends, as well as residencies in hotels and concert venues in both Russia and the United States. Later, in Wellington, New Zealand, she combined performance with teaching, mentoring young pianists from 2019 to 2023.
Beyond the stage, Yagunova shares her life as a musician abroad through two YouTube channels: HopChinaHop, which documents her experiences in the USA, China and New Zealand and Yulia Yagunova, featuring live performances and rehearsals.
