Alex Hitchcock: Dream Band

Read "Dream Band" reviewed by Geno Thackara

Alex Hitchcock has a lot of energy and a lot of ideas; four recordings have apparently left him in no danger of running out. Clearly it helps to have met plenty of friends and collaborators along the way. Besides the mutual inspiration that arises between generous players, he knows he will probably have a voice available (instrumental or literal) for just about any germ of a song that arises. Where each previous recording revolved around a single lineup, the cast ...

Joe Downard: Seven Japanese Tales

Read "Seven Japanese Tales" reviewed by Chris May

Up-and-coming London bassist Joe Downard's debut album is an ambitious affair which winningly blends intricate soundscapes created by retro-modern analog synthesisers with the two-horns-and-a-rhythm-section acoustic jazz tradition. Downard's sextet includes five other rising stars of the London scene, prominent among them trumpeter James Copus, tenor saxophonist Alex Hitchcock (whose self-titled album debut with his band AuB is on Edition) and drummer Felix Ambach. The seven-piece suite which is Seven Japanese Tales was, apparently, inspired by Japanese culture and, ...

Backgrounder: Barry Galbraith - Guitar and the Wind

Backgrounder: Barry Galbraith - Guitar and the Wind

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Barry Galbraith was one of New York's busiest session jazz guitarists in the 1940s, '50s and '60s. Between 1941 and the late 1970s, he was on 620 recording dates, a staggering total. How many albums did he record as a leader under his name? Just one—Guitar and the Wind, for Decca. What a shame.

His sole album is groovy and gorgeous. Galbraith could swing and his cord voicings and tasty improvised runs were unbeatable. My last post on Galbraith is ...

Barry Harris (1929-2021)

Barry Harris (1929-2021)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Barry Harris, a jazz pianist and beloved educator whose leadership and sideman recordings celebrated bebop—the 1940s modernist movement that established a roadmap for improvised jazz—died on December 8. He was 91. Though Harris was too young to have participated in bop's birth or initial  popularity in the years immediately after World War II, the Detroit-based pianist caught the tail end of the first wave. In particular, he was influenced by and adored Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, bebop's founding-father pianists, ...

The Kids Dig Barry Galbraith

The Kids Dig Barry Galbraith

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Barry Galbraith was a superb and tasteful jazz guitarist who played on dozens of albums behind big bands and combos. While he regretfully recorded just one album as a leader (Gone With the Wind, Decca, 1958), he wrote many jazz guitar books on comping, soloing, fingering, daily exercises and more. They are considered a must for jazz guitar studies and to grasp the jazz feel. As soon as my writing workload slows down, I'm going to spring for a guitar ...
