Umberto Tricca
Umberto Tricca was born in Vimercate (Me) in 1973. He studied jazz guitar in Milan at the “Cemm” school directed by Walter Donatiello and Berklee’s School teachers. Over the years he studied jazz harmony, composition and arrangement with Giovanni Tommaso, Giancarlo Boselli, Stephen Franceschini, Tomaso Lama, John Abercrombie, David Linx and Paul Fresu at Nuoro Jazz. He shared his research and study of contemporary artists such as Dave Holland and Steve Coleman with some musicians of the the Florentine scene, examinating harmony and rhythmic aspects. He took part in different musical projects: The Dotters (Claudio Giovagnoli, Peter Spitilli, Stephen Tamborrino) in which he faced the contemporary jazz repertoire; A.G.U.A. (Arianna Bucossi, Gabriele Ungar Ramps, Andrew Lovo, Damiano Niccolini) exploring Samba and Bossanova. At the same time he approached Indian music with the Saptak Indian association of Nihar Metha in collaboration with the tabla player Francis Gherardi. In 2012 he founded the Open Baaj quintet exploring sounds that join the Indian classical music to the western contemporary one. In 2015 he achieved the Second Level Degree in jazz Music at the National Conservatory "Luigi Cherubini" in Florence under the guide of Riccardo Fassi, Barend Middelhoff, Sandro Satta and Umberto Fiorentino with a thesis on the composer Steve Lehman.
