Ty Citerman

35 year-old guitarist and composer Ty Citerman has been writing and performing music for more than two decades, beginning in his native St. Louis, and then re-locating to New York City in the early 90’s. He has studied with Chris Rosenberg and Ben Monder.

Ty is a founding member and composer for the internationally acclaimed punk/jazz/new music ensemble Gutbucket. He has written for and performed with Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Todd Reynolds, Ethel, the Dirty Sock Funtime Band, Super String Theory, the composer collective Anti-Social Music, the indie rock band Lumatic, and many others.

Ty’s music has been recorded on the Cuneiform, Cantaloupe Music, Enja, NRW, Knitting Factory and Kids Creative labels. He has written much of the vast repertoire for Gutbucket, which has taken the group to 20 countries and 33 states during the group’s eleven-year (and running) career. His music has been featured on NPR (“Soundcheck,” “World Café Live”), Radio Free Europe and numerous college and independent radio stations across the US, UK and Canada. His compositions have also been premiered or performed at Jazz A Vienne, the Bang on a Can Marathon, the Earshot Jazz Festival, the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival, Worldport Jazz Festival, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and Warsaw Summer Jazz Days.

Ty was featured in the August 2006 issue of Guitar Player Magazine, who called his music “kinetic punk jazz opuses” which reveal “an explosive concoction containing lethal doses of Ornette Coleman, King Crimson, John Zorn, Black Sabbath, Stravinsky, and Fugazi.” In 2005, the Guardian (UK) wrote that Ty’s 2004 composition “ ‘Throsp%’ boasts a hypnotically creeping guitar riff and an atmosphere of sustained menace” which “is not standard jazz territory.”
