Germana Stella La Sorsa and Tom Ollendorff: After Hours

by Troy Dostert
For an EP that clocks in at a mere 25 or so minutes, there is a lot to enjoy on After Hours, vocalist Germana Stella La Sorsa's duo album with guitarist Tom Ollendorff. La Sorsa has been making a name for herself since her earliest days as a singer in Italy, while her visibility in the London jazz scene has been rising since her previous two releases, Vapour (33 Jazz, 2021) and Primary Colours (33 Jazz, 2024). The intimate setting ...

by Konstantin Rega
First albums are not the end-all-be-all, but they certainly count for something. London bassist Myra Brownbridge crafts a strong debut that shows a younger musician with spirit and intuition. The Voyage Out delivers softer melodies that still have a groove to them. With guitarist Tom Ollendorff, George Garford on alto sax and Matthew Holmes on drums, the quartet plays together with ease. Striking the right balance between instrumental solos, providing a clear tune to follow and a variety in compositional ...

Ireland March 1-9, 2024 At a time when veteran rock acts on their last legs are asking cash-strapped punters to part with hundreds of pounds to stand in a stadium to hear the same hits as the last tour, and the tour before that, it is worth reflecting on the terrific value for money that jazz gigs usually offer. Take Brilliant Corners, Belfast's one-and-only ...

There is technical excellence, there is pretty, there is a well-honed trio, there is an in-sync guest saxophonist, and yet, and yet.... Open House is London-based guitarist Tom Ollendorff's follow-up to A Song For You (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2021), his debut, which also featured bassist Conor Chaplin and drummer Marc Michel. The vibe is the same as on the earlier album, but there are differences in the detail. This time out, five, rather than eight, of ...

Just his second album, following the impressive debut A Song For You (Fresh Sound ...

They say lightning never strikes in the same place twice. But sometimes it does. When it comes to new jazz guitarists of more than average talent, London has produced two in fairly rapid succession. In spring 2020, Rob Luft released his immaculate and uplifting sophomore album, Life Is The Dancer (Edition). Exactly a year later, Tom Ollendorff is releasing A Song For You (Fresh Sounds), a debut which delivers much and promises even more. Ollendorff and Luft ...
