The DownBeat Award winning Azucartones is part of the Commercial Music Program at the Kent Denver School in Englewood, CO. The program focuses on styles of music not traditionally taught at the secondary level including R&B, salsa, jazz, soul, pop, and Afro-Cuban. In 2014, the Azucartones were recognized by DownBeat Magazine as the best high school Latin band in the country. They typically play 10-15 gigs each year throughout Colorado, and have performed in San Diego, New Orleans, and Miami. In 2014, the band invited to perform in Havana, Cuba, where they were able to attend a concert at the Karl Marx Theatre with member of the original Buena Vista Social Club. In addition to performing multiple gigs throughout the year, the band also spends time recording in our studio at Kent Denver, and other studios in the Denver area to help the musicians gain a better sense of music industry as a whole. The band has performed with multiple artists including Jeff Coffin, Karl Hunter, Corey Christiansen, Farnell Newton, Helen de la Rosa, Kobie Watkins, Tom “Bones” Malone, Kenwood Dennard, Ruben Alvarez, Javon Jackson, and Will Kennedy, among others. The band is directed by Steve Holley, an award-winning, Grammy nominated educator and proud Memphis musician.
