Sir Charles Thompson in 15 Tracks

Sir Charles Thompson in 15 Tracks

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Pianist Sir John Thompson could play anything. And he did, from swing and jump blues to bebop and pop, on recording session after recording session. Lester Young dubbed him “Sir" in the early 1940s when they were both performing at Cafe Society in New York. Prez laid the moniker on Thompson to honor his elegant keyboard style, and it stuck. [Photo above of Sir Charles Thompson] Remarkably, Thompson lived to be 98. I say remarkably because being a jazz musicians ...

Interview: Sir George Martin (PT. 4)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

After an hour spent chatting in the cozy sitting room of Sir George Martin's summer home several weeks ago, it was time for me to make the two-hour drive back to London. I said farewell to Lady Judith, Sir George's wife, and Sir George and I walked out to my car on the gravel drive. As I looked around for the last time, there seemed to be an unusually casual feel to those trimming his hedges and tending shrubs and ...

Interview: Sir George Martin (PT. 3)

Sir George and I spent a little over an hour in the gazebo on the lawn behind his summer house. Afterward we retired to his home's charming sitting room to enjoy tea and cookies that his wife, Lady Judith, served. Interestingly, many of his awards were sitting haphazardly on a shelf. Which makes perfect sense. What Sir George has seen and heard and the magnitude of his contributed to world culture transcends metal and wood, as prestigious as the awards ...

Interview: Sir George Martin (PT. 2)

After I arrived at Sir George Martin's summer home several weeks ago for my Wall Street Journal interview, the Beatles producer and I chatted briefly outside about my drive. Then he suggested we converse in a low-roofed gazebo atop a slow-rising hill behind his home. As we walked up the lawn, Sir George told me he had to rely on two hearing aids and lip-reading to converse. I asked if he could hear music. He shook his head. “I have ...

Interview: Sir George Martin (PT. 1)

A few weeks ago, I rented a car in London and drove two hours west to visit the Sir George Martin at his summer home for a Wall Street Journal profile. (The interview appears in today's paper, or go here.) Directions took me through horse country, along narrow roads with dense hedgerows, but I managed to arrive at his home right on time, despite the demands of driving on the other side of the road. When I pulled up the ...

Sir Roland Hanna Piano Solo: Colors from a Giant's Kit

Sir Roland Hanna Piano Solo: Colors from a Giant's Kit

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

Like Jaki Byard, Roland Hanna was a pianist who had absorbed the entire jazz tradition and his playing reflected that. His posthumously released solo session, Colors from A Giant's Kit (IPO), finds him in the mood to cover a lot of ground. There are some quite fetching originals and well-chosen standards, from Duke through Trane. All of it shows us a more intimate side of Hanna that what you'd get, say, in his work with the Jones-Lewis band. His more ...

Bob "Sir Bob-O" Washington, 1922-2011

Source: Chris M. Slawecki

In Kirkland, WA, on March 20th, 2011, one day shy of his 89th birthday, Bob Washington—"Sir Bob-O"—left this world to join the very large Jazz ensemble in a better place, joining his friends and heroes, “Satchmo," “Duke," “Count," “Hamp," “Pres," “Bird," and many others after a brave, lengthy battle with heart and lung ailments.

Known and revered as a robustly talented and tireless organizer, leader, and participant in the arts and civic affairs for over fifty years, Bob enriched the ...
