Russ Helm

Russ Helm was born in Roanoke Virginia and began playing drums at the age of 9. His initial inspiration came from the popular rock music of the time, however, with guidance and influence, especially from his father, he began to take an interest in jazz drummers such as Buddy Rich and Max Roach. After graduating high school Russ attended VCU studying under Doug Richards, Scott Taylor, and Howard Curtis. While in college at VCU Russ was able to play in several small ensembles and both large bands (VCU's Jazz Orchestra I & II). During this time Russ also earned a scholarship to study at the Festival At Sandpoint with Gunther Schuller and Victor Lewis. Upon graduating from VCU Russ worked and played up and down the east coast from New York to Virginia Beach. Recent highlights have included performing with Chuck Redd and Ken Peplowski.
