Pigfoot

Stunning interpretations of New Orleans classics performed by an all-star quartet, assembled by Big Air and Loose Tubes trumpeter and composer Chris Batchelor. “21st Century Acid Trad” also features the endlessly creative rhythm section of pianist Liam Noble, Oren Marshall on tuba and drummer Paul Clarvis.

The result is an exceptional group who adopt an experimental collective approach that is rooted in traditional practice, and can stretch the material in all directions without losing its essential character.

Taking some of the famous hits of the major figures of traditional jazz such as Louis Armstrong’s “Basin St Blues”, Fats Waller’s “Jitterbug Waltz” and Bessie Smith’s “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out”, Pigfoot have re-worked the material into a unique combination of old and new, in which the originals are affectionately transformed by a deep knowledge of free improvisation, post-bop rhythmic systems and contemporary harmonic language.

“Pigfoot’s debut album not only blows the cobwebs off eight favourites of the trad repertoire, it sandblasts away decades of treacly cliché”
