Pepe Habichuela

Pepe Habichuela, born José Antonio Carmona Carmona in Granada, Spain, in 1944, is one of the most influential flamenco guitarists of his generation and a central figure in the celebrated Habichuela musical dynasty.

Raised in Granada's flamenco tradition, Habichuela began playing at an early age in the caves of Sacromonte before moving to Madrid in 1964. There he established himself as an accompanist to some of flamenco's leading singers, including Juanito Valderrama, Camarón de la Isla and Carmen Linares. His most significant early artistic partnership was with singer Enrique Morente, with whom he helped expand the harmonic and expressive vocabulary of contemporary flamenco. Their recordings included the landmark Homenaje a D. Antonio Chacón and Despegando.

Habichuela subsequently developed a career as a soloist and composer, beginning with A Mandeli in 1983, a tribute to his grandfather, Habichuela el Viejo. The album also reflected his willingness to expand the traditional flamenco ensemble, incorporating musicians such as bassist Carles Benavent. He continued that exploratory approach on Habichuela en Rama (1997) and Yerbagüena (2001), the latter bringing flamenco together with Indian music through his collaboration with The Bollywood Strings.

Jazz has been another important strand of Habichuela's musical life. He performed with trumpeter Don Cherry and later formed a particularly fruitful partnership with bassist Dave Holland. Their 2010 album Hands brought Holland's improvisational language together with Habichuela's deeply rooted flamenco guitar, demonstrating the natural affinity between the two traditions. Habichuela has also collaborated with musicians including Nitin Sawhney and Anoushka Shankar.

His influence extends through several generations of Spanish musicians. He is the father of guitarist Josemi Carmona and uncle of Juan José Carmona and Antonio Carmona, musicians closely associated with Ketama and the emergence of nuevo flamenco.

Rooted in the traditions of Granada while consistently open to jazz, Indian music and other forms of musical exchange, Pepe Habichuela has helped broaden flamenco's vocabulary without losing its essential character. His playing combines rhythmic authority, melodic sensitivity and a highly personal sound developed over more than six decades.
