Paulo Alexandre Pereira da Costa

Paulo Costa is a versatile drummer and percussionist who is involved in several projects of different musical styles such as Jazz, Improvisation, World Music, Contemporary and Classical Music. In the Jazz area he is the leader, composer and drummer of pLoo, with which he recorded the albums “PELE DE PAPEL” (Carimbo Porta-Jazz 2018) and "ESTEREOGRAMA" (Carimbo Porta-Jazz 2015). He is co-leader of Glauco where he plays vibraphone and steel drums and with which he recorded the album "Azul Estranho" (Author Edition 2011).

In the area of Improvised Music he is co-leader and percussionist of Triedro with which he recorded the album "Triedro" (RPM 2016) and that will recently present a new album. He worked with groups such as Space Ensemble, FMI (Front of Improvised Music) or Pangwe Lingua. In the area of World Music as a percussionist he recorded with the Brazilians Lilian Raquel & Claudio César Ribeiro, “Com Todas as Cores” (Numérica 2013), and with the Cape Verdian Bilan, "Bilan" (Author Edition 2008). Worked with names like Mozambican Matchume Zango, Brazilians Amarelo Manga or the Portuguese Retimbrar. In contemporary music he has been working with groups like DRUMMING - Percussion Group, The Heartbreakers and Toy Ensemble.

In the area of Classical Music he worked with several orchestras, among which he emphasizes: FIMUPA XXIX Symphonic Orchestra (Brazil), Espinho Classical Orchestra, Wellesley College Choir of Boston (USA), Gaia Orchestra, Norte Orchestra, Póvoa de Varzim Symphonic Orchestra, Portuguese Saxophone Orchestra and Pedroso Chamber Orchestra. Since 2010 he has been active as a composer for contemporary dance and accompanist musician. He emphasizes the original compositions for the pieces "Scubi" with choreography of Paula Moreno and "The sky is only a blue disguise of hell" with choreography of Jonana von Mayer Trindade and Hugo Calhim Cristovão (Nuisis Zobop).

Paulo Costa was born in Oporto in 1974 and started playing drums in rock groups as a self-taught in 1995. In 1998 he studied drums at Oporto Jazz School and in 1999 he began his percussion studies at the Music Conservatory of Maia. In 2000 he decided to abandon his studies in Engineering and dedicate himself entirely to music. He completed the free percussion course at the Espinho Music Academy in 2003 and in 2007 he graduated in percussion at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo of the Instituto Politécnico do Porto (ESMAE-IPP), under the guidance of Miquel Bernat and Manuel Campos. In that same year he attended ESMAE's Free Vibraphone Jazz Course with Professor Jeffery Davis. Between 2003 and 2006 he maintained private lessons in Latin and African percussion with the Uruguayan Nico Arnicho. In 2016 he completed his Master's Degree in Music Teaching at the University of Minho. Paulo Costa teaches percussion at the Oporto Music Conservatory.
