Odd: Libert

Read "Libert" reviewed by AAJ Staff

The ODD Jazz Quartet, as this Canadian group is also known, is not particularly strange about the way it plies its open-ended approach to jazz styles from funk to bop to free, all cleverly merged on Liberté 54--which for some reason has only been released in Canada. The words “unusual" or “inventive" would better describe the music on this nine-track, fifty-minute album.

After a scintillating performance at last year's Montreal Jazz Festival, ODD won the festival's grand prize, which included ...

The Odd Couple Quintet +1 By John Clark

The Odd Couple Quintet +1 By John Clark

John Clark French horn CD Release on Composers Concordance Records “Virtually every French horn student starts playing the Mozart Concerti at a young age. I think I was 11 or 12 when I first attempted them, and even then I wanted to improvise on them. I had no idea what 'jazz' or 'creative music' was, but I had the desire to change a note here and there, to add some notes and leave some out. Thanks to Composers Concordance, this ...

Laszlo Gardony Gets into Odd-Time Signatures and Pianistic Singularity on "Signature Time"

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

While you've been doing what ever you've been doing Hungarian-born pianist-composer-bandleader Laszlo Gardony has just completed his ninth album. Signature Time (Sunnyside 4011) is the name of it, which rightfully suggests that this is Laszlo's personal stylistic statement, and also that time signatures will be a factor. Both are quite true. It's a goodly trio part of the time with Laszlo at the piano, John Lockwood on bass, and Yoron Israel at the drums. Tenorist Stan Strickland productively cameos with ...

Trent Reznor's Odd Strategy for Movie Soundtrack

Trent Reznor's Odd Strategy for Movie Soundtrack

Source: HypeBot

Already, speculations are being made that, in releasing the soundtrack for The Social Network, Trent Reznor has abandoned the very business model that he defined. There's the obvious email address for a free download widget. Then, the options are as follows: CD, HD Blu-Ray audio, and vinyl. Missing from the equation appears to be Trent's signature and now famous touch of connecting with his fans and giving them reasons beyond the music to buy the higher-priced, more innovative tiers. I ...

There might not have been an odder long-term pairing in the music business than 'Bones' Howe and Tom Waits. The engineer and producer was responsible for a string of the artist's classic ...
