Dave Edmunds: Swan Songs: The Singles 1976-1981

Read "Swan Songs: The Singles 1976-1981" reviewed by Doug Collette

Extended as is Joe Marchese's essay in the twelve-page booklet enclosed with Swan Songs, it is nonetheless as breezy and free-flowing as the content spread across the two compact discs. Consisting of cuts originally issued 45-rpm singles on the label imprimatur of Led Zeppelin (referenced in the main title of the package), the cumulative impact of these selections reaffirms the effect of the somewhat daunting expanse of prose, that is, clearly making the case for Edmunds as a decidedly rootsy ...

John Lee Hooker: The Best of Friends

Read "The Best of Friends" reviewed by Doug Collette

In contrast to his often (always?) irascible peer Chester Burnett, aka Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker has long been amenable to collaborations, reciprocal and otherwise. Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Charlie Musselwhite and Carlos Santana, among others, appeared on The Healer (Chameleon,1989) and all those artists also populate the credits for The Best of Friends. (Santana, the Mexican-born guitar hero, appears with two different iterations of his band). Fittingly titled, this anthology is a suitable companion piece to Whiskey ...

Nick Lowe - The Old Magic (2011)

Nick Lowe - The Old Magic (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Growing older has made Nick Lowe grayer, a little quieter, but no less clever, no less relevant, and certainly no less off-handedly absorbing. He is the living, breathing, guitar-playing, Buddy Holly shade-wearing embodiment of the old saw about getting better with age. And that's saying something. After all, Lowe helped shape the New Wave sound of the late 1970s and '80s as a producer for Elvis Costello, the Pretenders and Graham Parker, even while establishing his own often overlooked career ...

Nick Lowe:jesus of Cool

By: Dennis Cook

There's not a lot of perfect albums, and Jesus of Cool (Yep Roc) is one of them. Every element - songwriting, production, performances, arrangements - is spot on, and this 30th Anniversary Edition just ups the ante on what was already a mighty good thing.

When Jesus first surfaced in 1978 it was Nick Lowe's solo debut but he was already a hardened veteran of Britain's pub rock scene, which birthed Ace, fueled The Faces and had ...
