Kana Miyamoto
Kana Miyamoto is a New York–based flutist and composer from Chiba, Japan. Her work explores jazz improvisation, composition, and field recording.
Her solo album, In the Canyon (2026), is a collection of flute improvisations recorded outdoors in Utah, capturing the interaction between her flute and the sounds of the surrounding environment. Her earlier album, In the Forest, is a flute and kora collaboration with Yasuhiro Sakairi, also recorded outdoors in Japan.
Miyamoto founded Kanacept, an ensemble exploring collective improvisation through independent melodic lines and contrapuntal interplay. The group released Spring Doze and Dancer in the Galaxy and toured Japan. She also founded and curates Duo Connections, an intimate concert series centered on musical dialogue, featuring artists including Steve Cardenas, Leni Stern, Arta Jēkabosone, Kengchakaj, and Kane Mathis.
Miyamoto has performed extensively throughout New York City, including at The Jazz Gallery, The Jazz Loft, 55 Bar, and Nomad Jazz Festival. She has collaborated with musicians including Lew Tabackin, Ron McClure, Frank LoCrasto, and June McDoom.
Miyamoto won first prize in the National Flute Association’s Jazz Artist Competition and is a recipient of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ “Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists.” She is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, Tokyo College of Music, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. She is currently on the faculty at the New York Jazz Workshop.
