Delfeayo Marsalis Uptown Jazz Orchestra: Crescent City Jewels

Read "Crescent City Jewels" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Among the four musically talented Marsalis brothers from New Orleans, Delfeayo is the one who plays trombone. He is also the one who leads the impressive Uptown Jazz Orchestra in Crescent City Jewels, an affable salute to his beloved home town. The playlist spans the gamut from blues to ballads, breezy bon bons to flat-out burners, and the UJO is brightly polished and at ease in every mood and at any tempo. The New Orleans vibe is ...

The Headhunters: The Stunt Man

Read "The Stunt Man" reviewed by Doug Collette

With the half-century anniversaries of Herbie Hancock's work with the Headhunters having passed in roughly the last year--Head Hunters (Columbia, 1973) and Thrust (Columbia, 1974)--it is appropriate the current configuration of the group has continued regular activity. Speakers in the House (Ropeadope, 2022) is an album of dashing panache and ...

Derrick Shezbie: The Ghost of Buddy Bolden

Read "The Ghost of Buddy Bolden" reviewed by Jim Trageser

Derrick Shezbie's sophomore release as leader--a mere 26 years after his highly acclaimed debut, Spodie's Back (Warner Bros., 1994)--finds the New Orleans trumpeter in much the same territory as a quarter-century ago: traditional jazz played with an assured combination of virtuosity and energy. He came of age musically as a member of the neotraditionalist Rebirth Brass Band before Quincy Jones' Qwest Records signed him in the early '90s--and he's continued to play ...
