Mr. P.C.
What happens when a jazz pianist spends his career bouncing between high-profile concert halls, hellish wedding gigs, major festivals, cruise ship disasters, recording dates, and insane jam sessions? Bill Anschell turns it all into comic gold. His debut book, Benched, released on November 25th, offers satirical stories that pull back the curtain on the absurd realities of jazz life. Perfection: Doug Raney - 'Lean Years' (1979)
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Guitarist Doug Raney was one of the greats. The son of guitarist Jimmy Raney, Doug spent much of his career in Copenhagen. Doug was a hard-wired addict. As his brother, Jon, told me soon after Doug's death in 2016, at age 59: Doug was struggling with prior drug addiction and was on the program for a long time. But it was really his addiction to alcohol, in excess, that did him in. He was a different type of drunk than ...

Source:
GoMedia PR
It's been 15 years since Vancouver’s new music / Javanese gamelan group released its last record, Hive. In the meantime, the ensemble took a new name. Traditionally, gamelans are named after the poetic honorific title bestowed on the large gong: Madu Sari translates as “the essence of honey.” But times change, and Alligator Joy was named after the rumored-to-be-gun-running freighter that brought this newly created, chamber-sized gamelan gadhon to Vancouver in 1990. The pieces on Penumbra were workshopped and premiered ...

Source:
Jason Byrne, Red Cat Publicity
In 2010, jazz pianist Yelena Eckemoff made a brazen decision for the time. She would produce all of her albums independently, despite the interest major jazz labels had shown in representing her. Today—22 masterful albums featuring more than 50 world-class musicians later—Yelena’s artistic vision has come to fruition: an oeuvre of works completely her own. Yelena understood early on that to communicate her musical vision, she would need a certain measure of creative freedom in her projects. As something of ...
