Morten Schantz

Morten Schantz is a pianist, composer and bandleader born 1980 in Aarhus, Denmark. He is a member and the founder of progressive art-rock-jazz band, JazzKamikaze, and also the leader of his own jazz trio. By 2014 he has released 8 albums, 4 solo albums and 4 with JazzKamikaze. Schantz has won several awards based on his work with JazzKamikaze as well as receiving two grammy nominations for his solo work, most recently as “Jazz Composer of the Year” for “Morten Schantz: Unicorn”. He made his debut as a recording artist with “Morten Schantz Segment” back in 2004, an album which especially received great attention in Japan. Since then Schantz has put together an impressive resume going back and forth between duties with JazzKamikaze, solo projects, and touring as a sideman for pop/rock/hip-hop artists. Unicorn is the latest album from the Danish pianist and composer Morten Schantz who is adding another adventurous chapter to an already impressive career. The album consists of nine songs, eight of which are original compositions written during a seven months residency in Northern Italy. The luscious landscapes of the Veneto region was the perfect setting for Schantz to dive into his newest vision: To invent a sound blending the sound of his critically acclaimed jazz trio with Middle Eastern tonalities and West African grooves.
