Masala Quartet

Masala Quartet is a Moscow (Russia) based collective playing jazz, funk, and contemporary improvisational material. Although their music is greatly influenced by the heritage of jazz, it obviously carries the participant's unique creativeness in it.

With their original compositions, Masala Quartet is a laureate of the contests "Usadba Jazz Sochi" (2019, Sochi, Russia), New/Open Showcase Festival (2020, Yekaterinburg, Russia), finalist of the 13th Bucharest International Jazz Competition (2019, Bucharest, Romania), winner of the "Piano in jazz" competition in the ensemble and composition nominations (2017 – 2018, Moscow, Russia).

Two EPs were released in 2016 and 2018, then the first LP “Stories from Masala” was released in 2020 by the renown FancyMusic label.

Since 2020, the collective has two different original programs with different lineups (!).

Masala Sun Quartet are Alexey Soukhov (tenor saxophone, composer), Anna Beme (piano, keys, composer), Dmitry Taranov (double bass, composer), and Daniil Morozov (drums).

And the second program, Masala Moon Quartet, is a result of the collaboration with one of the best russian drummers, Petr Ivshin, who substitutes Daniil Morozov; this is a synthesis of composer's and free jazz approach.
