Mannheimer Schlagwerk

The Mannheimer Schlagwerk is the drum and percussion ensemble of the State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim.

The young musicians around Prof. Dennis Kuhn, who have the reputation of being a top ensemble, are characterized not only by their particularly wide range, but also by their precision and willingness to experiment, which is regularly admired. In the nineties, Prof. Dennis Kuhn initiated the “Mannheim Drum Night”, which has become a cult series, which began in the old fire station in Mannheim and has continued to exist under the name MANNHEIMER SCHLAGWERK PROJEKT. The ensemble has now celebrated its 20th anniversary. Under the direction of Prof. Dennis Kuhn, the ensemble has conquered a percussion repertoire that ranges from classical percussion literature to experimental music and on the other hand from solo works to large percussion orchestras.

Under the direction of ballet director Philippe Talard, the Mannheim percussion team at the Nationaltheater Mannheim realized a sensational dance production with the piece "Der Seiltänzer", which was a major crowd puller at the opera house for several years.

The success of "Der Seiltänzer" was followed by, among other things, "Drums 'n' Dance" as a further collaboration with the ballet of the Nationaltheater Mannheim. In 2012, the Mannheim percussion played the opening concert at the 8th International Percussion Festival in Kraków. The highlights of the ensemble's history also include guest performances such as "Moritz 5o!" in Hamburg, the festival celebrating the 50th birthday of the composer Moritz Eggert . In addition, works were and are written by various composers especially for the Mannheim percussion.

The percussion ensemble Mannheimer Schlagwerk used Steve Reich's 2009 composition Mallet Quartet (Nonesuch Records, 2011) as a template for these commissioned compositions. Four mallet instruments form the core of all of this music (the basic instrumentation is two marimbas and two vibraphones), but each of the composers takes their own path (and in some cases expands the instrumentation a bit). The composers are all known for a musical style that favors rhythmic repetition, in a way that can recall Reich's ...

Markus Reuter: Sun Trance

Read "Sun Trance" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Markus Reuter has a reputation as a guitar shredding animal. He has been called a power trio kingpin, his artistry referred to as “fearless and ferocious." The cliche “not for the faint of heart" comes to mind on sets like Truce (Moonjune Records, 2020) and Shapeshifter (Moonjune Records, (2020). But he has a softer side, one that presents a music marinated in serenity and subtle beauty—his teaming with multi-instrumentalist (playing piano here) Gary Husband on the ethereally gorgeous Music Of ...
