JS
John “JS” Williams II is a composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and
educator whose rich musical roots and genre-spanning experience make him a vital
force in the modern incarnation of Fishbone—the iconic punk-funk-ska-soul collective
known for defying boundaries and challenging norms for over four decades.
Born and raised in New York City, JS Williams cultivated his talents early, attending
the prestigious LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, followed by
studies at The New School and a Master’s degree in Music from Queens College.
Mentored by luminaries like Ed Truetel, Jimmy Owens, and Michael Mossman,
JS developed a deep musical fluency that would guide him across genres, cultures, and
stages.
His career has included performances alongside trailblazing acts such as Living
Colour, Miss Lauryn Hill, and the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic featuring
George Clinton. Known for his impeccable technique, expansive range, and expressive
trumpet playing, JS is also a gifted vocalist and arranger with a passion for musical
storytelling that blends education, history, and innovation.
In 2024, JS Williams officially joined Fishbone as trumpet player and vocalist,
stepping into a legacy of radical creativity and political commentary. Alongside
frontman Angelo Moore, returning original member Christopher Dowd, and fellow
bandmates James Jones (bass), Hassan Hurd (drums), and Tracey “Spacey T”
Singleton (guitar).
His arrival comes at a powerful new chapter in Fishbone’s storied journey. With the
upcoming release of their first full-length album in over 20 years, Stockholm
Syndrome (dropping June 27, 2025), The album dives headfirst into the chaos of
modern life, delivering scorching political anthems with tracks that honor Fishbone’s
past while forging a bold new path.
Whether in the studio, on stage, or in the classroom, JS Williams is committed to using
music as a tool for connection, education, and transformation.
