Joel Newton

"Newton's your man whether you prefer your jazz-guitar virtuosi rough or smooth. The tunes range from funk to totally %#$*!-up (in the best sense)." (VILLAGE VOICE)

Joel Newton is a guitarist, composer, and bandleader, based in New York City. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1990 with a degree in Philosophy, and from William Paterson College in 1993 with a degree in Jazz Performance. In New York, his projects explore jazz, rock, funk, and various shades of avant-garde. He has been described as "...an adventurous guitarist with chops to spare" (Jazzreview.com) who "is able to build a spark into a full-fledged fire." (Cadence Magazine). His hard-edged and experimental jazz-rock group, the Joel Newton Situation ("JNS"), described as "a sort of Medeski, Martin and Mahavishnu thing" (Village Voice) with "…a new angle on jazz-rock" (All About Jazz), has performed extensively in New York and elsewhere in the U.S., including long residencies at NYC's Knitting Factory. Joel works as a leader, sideman, and co-leader with such jazz luminaries as Donny McCaslin, DD Jackson, Christian Howes, Matt Shulman, David Binney, JT Lewis and Jeff Hirshfield. From 2001 to 2003, Joel did extensive studio guitar work for producer Harvey Goldberg, sound engineer for Late Night with David Letterman. In 2004 he performed in and helped score the musical Mankynde, which participated in the NY International Fringe Festival.

Joel has 2 self-produced CD releases, ONE (2000) and Crying and Laughing (2006). See www.joelnewton.com for more information.

The Joel Newton Situation New Now Self Produced 2022 Since the first year of Covid had left everyone suddenly making music alone, of course it was inevitable that the trend of isolation albums would eventually give way to the out-of-isolation album as the world moved into partial circulation. For the Joel Newton Situation, that turns out to be more of a halfway step than a full revival. After Out Of and Into (Self Produced, 2020) ...

Joel Newton Situation: Out Of and Into

Read "Out Of and Into" reviewed by Geno Thackara

If Joel Newton was stuck at home in isolation during the time of Covid, his imagination apparently never got the message. Exploration and travel still make a bright and refreshing theme on this largely solo affair. Thankfully the feel of adventure and open trails has not left him; Out Of and Into has his guitar work sounding fun and as jaunty as ever, even in a context noticeably smaller than usual. Doing the one-man-band thing at home is ...

Joel Newton Situation: Crying and Laughing

Read "Crying and Laughing" reviewed by Donald Elfman

How about this--a band that works together regularly, playing music that is an astounding mix of free and composed with dashes of dance, minimalism and group improvisation? Guitarist Joel Newton is the composer here, and he has done up half-a-dozen ways for his band members to show off their best stuff as well as to give life to his rich creations. Let us direct listeners first to the gorgeous “New Day. It's a hymn, it seems, to ...
