Perfection: Jackie Paris - Skylark (1953)

Perfection: Jackie Paris - Skylark (1953)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

For me, the finest and most perfect vocal rendition of Hoagy Carmichael's Skylark is by Jackie Paris. Recorded for Coral Records in August 1953, the session was arranged by Neal Hefti. The band featured Billy Taylor (p), George Barnes (g), Sandy Block (b), Eddie Grady (d), Harry Breuer (vib) and 10 strings, with Hefti conducting. It's one of the only versions of the song where you can really hear the wonderment and emotion Carmichael intended when he wrote it. Most ...

All About Jazz is celebrating Jackie McLean's birthday today!

John Lenwood (Jackie) McLean was an alto saxophonist, composer, bandleader and educator, born in New York City. His father, John Sr., who died in 1939, played guitar in Tiny Bradshaw's orchestra. After his father's death, his musical education was continued by his godfather, by his stepfather, who owned a record store, and by several noted teachers. He also received informal tutoring from neighbours Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and Charlie Parker. During ...

On the afternoon of September 28, 1974, husband-and-wife singers Jackie Paris and Anne Marie Moss videotaped a gig in the Maisonette at New York's St. Regis Hotel. They were backed by Mike Abene on piano, Harvie S on electric bass and Steve Gadd on drums. The point of the taping was to support a TV-show concept Paris and Moss were pitching. When the TV show didn't pan out, an album of the material, Jackie Paris & Anne Marie Moss Live ...
