Gabriel Paiuk

Gabriel Paiuk is a composer and sound artist whose recent work is focused on the way notions, practices and material aspects of sound mediation inform how listening occurs. His work takes the form of sound installations, compositions for instruments and electronics and collaborations with different disciplines.

In the past years his works have been presented at Gallery W139, LI-MA, Gaudeamus and Sonic Acts Festival (Amsterdam), Universität Mozarteum (Salzburg) and Willem Twee Kunstruimte-November Music Festival (Den Bosch). His ensemble and solo work has been performed by öenm, ASKO ensemble, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Slagwerk Den Haag, Francesco Dillon, Ekkehard Windrich, Ensemble Modelo62, NeoQuartet, Ensemble 306, Quinteto Sonorama and Alexander Bruck, among others.

In 2006 his work Res Extensa was the first sound installation to be awarded the Gaudeamus composition prize.

Coupled to his artistic work he’s been involved in different research and educational contexts. In 2019 he conceived and curated the international symposium Transformations of the Audible, a collaboration between the HdK, Leiden University and West Den Haag. Since 2014 he is a member of the faculty staff at the Institute of Sonology (The Hague, NL) and is currently a PhD candidate in Leiden University under the supervision of Peter Ablinger, Julia Kursell and Marcel Cobussen.

Since 2016 he leads a workshop on Sonic Scenography at the Master in Scenography at the HKU (Utrecht), and has given lectures and conducted workshops within contexts such as the Master Artistic Research at KABK (Den Haag), KASK-School of Arts (Ghent), the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (UvA - Amsterdam), UNM - Young Nordic Music Days (Aarhus) and the conference on the Philosophy of Human Technology Relations at the University of Twente. His articles have been published in Organised Sound magazine (Cambridge University Press, UK) the Orpheus Institute research Series (Leuven University Press) Kunstlicht Tijdschrift Journal (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) and Reflexiones Marginales (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).

Since 2001 he is composer and sound artist of the Buenos Aires-based La Otra dance company, having developed the sound of numerous works for dance/physical theatre premiered in numerous theatres and festivals in Buenos Aires and internationally.

As a pianist-improviser he performed and recorded together with musicians like Axel Dorner, Jason Kahn, Keith Rowe, Andrea Neumann, Burkhard Beins, Rhodri Davies, Gunter Mueller, Lucio Capece, Robin Hayward, Sergio Merce and others, in venues and festivals in Berlin, Brussels, New York, Barcelona, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Lisbon and editing records in diverse specialized labels.

He was academic director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Contemporary Music in Buenos Aires (2009) and taught sound design at the Center for Cinematographic Investigations in Buenos Aires (2004–2009). Show less
