Jazz this week: Manhattan Transfer & Take 6; Cassity, Jensen & Wolfe; and more

Source: St. Louis Jazz Notes by Dean Minderman

While this week's concert calendar isn't as jam-packed with jazz and creative music as last week's almost-insane schedule, there still are several noteworthy shows happening over the next few days, including a long-anticipated concert teaming up two of the top jazz-influenced vocal groups in the world, and more. Let's go to the highlights... Also on Thursday, the New Orleans Suspects are back in town for another performance at the Broadway Oyster Bar, and singer Erin Bode returns to Cyrano's. Friday, ...

Debut Album From Bassist Tim Wolfe, Jr. Released March 25, 2014

Source: Tim Wolfe, Jr.

Topics of Conversation is the debut album from bassist and composer Tim Wolfe, Jr. The album is a nod to the great tradition of East coast hard-bop and features Wolfe’s original compositions. The band on the album is comprised of first-call talent in the Philadelphia area: guitarist Larry Tamanini (who lends an original composition to the album), vibraphonist Adam Pfannenstiel, saxophonist Thomas Razler, and drummer Bill Avayou. Wolfe’s compositional style is melody-driven, leaving lots of space for the band members’ ...

Cruel Sister: Music for String Orchestra by Bang-on-a-Can's Julia Wolfe

Cruel Sister: Music for String Orchestra by Bang-on-a-Can's Julia Wolfe

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

For all my exposure to the marvelous Downtown New York institution Bang-on- a Can, I have not had the pleasure of hearing much of the music of co-founder-composer Julia Wolfe. There is no good reason for this. It simply is an omission on my part. The situation has been rectified by listening to her new release of compositions for the string orchestra Ensemble Resonanz, Cruel Sister (Cantaloupe 21069). The album contains two longish works: “Cruel Sister" (2004), based on the ...
