About Me

Katie Bull was born in New York City, and raised in Greenwich Village, Manhattan on McDougal street, and in West Beth. From age 7- 14 she spent some formative years living in upstate New York in a town called Brockport, on the Erie Canal near Lake Ontario. At age 14 her family moved back to Manhattan and lived in a performance loft, in Tribeca. This is when she met her jazz mothers - Jay Clayton and Sheila Jordan - who took her under their wings, and nurtured her jazz singing. She also sang with Kirk Nurock's Natural Sound. Katie has played with numerous musicians including: the late Frank Kimbrough; Michael Jefry Stevens; Landon Knoblock; Lou Grassi; Matt Wilson; Harvey Sorgen; George Schuller; Joe Fonda; Martin Wind; Cameron Brown; Hilliard Greene; Joel Frahm, Mara Rosenbloom and Jeff Lederer, to name a few. She has the following albums to date: “Conversations with the Jokers,” “Love Spook” and “The Bull-Fonda Duo: Cup of Joe, No Bull,” “The Story, So Far” on Corn Hill Indie. Her next album was on the Innova Label and received a Grammy Nom Consideration. It was recorded at Systems Two, titled “Freak Miracle,” with Frank Kimbough, Landon Knoblock, Joe Fonda, Harvey Sorgen, Jeff Lederer, and Ayelete Rose Gottlieb on guest vocals. “Bull is practically reinventing the vocal wheel.” (Harris/All About Jazz). “Bull gets it right, 'it' being something unconventional and wholly undefined.” (Lorge, Vox News AAJ-NY). Her album, “All Hot Bodies Radiate” on Ashokan Indie, was an NPR #6 Best Jazz Vocal Album 2015 and featured Landon Knoblock, piano; George Schuller, drums; Joe Fonda, bass; and Jeff Lederer, saxophones. Katie is also a multi-media performance artist: She co-founded the downtown theater company The Bull Family Orchestra, and the Improvisational Arts Ensembles, which was an umbrella organization for improvisational dance and dance-theater. Katie is a published playwright, and writer - with her essay ”The Jazz Mandala Voyage” appearing in Silent Solos Improvisors Speak, Editor Renate Da Rin, Buddy's Knife Press (available directly from the publisher). She is a professional vocal coach and created Whole Body Voice (c) work informed by her first mentor the late Chuck Jones, the work of Moshe Feldenkrais and Feldenkrais practitioner Bob Chopra, and voice coach icons Patsy Rodenburgh, and Catherine Fitzmaurice. She is a FGNA Certified Feldenkrais (c) Practitioner and a Certified Fitzmaurice (c) Lead Trainer. Whole Body Voice (c) is a whole body approach to the spoken and sung word. Katie coaches in New York City both freelance and at the Atlantic Theater Company, NYU, & freelance in film, television and theater. January 11th 2024 Katie will be sharing her new compositions titled The Hope Etudes, with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and saxophonist Jeff Lederer at La Salla Rosa in Montreal, on a double bill with the brilliant vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb. Katie is recording her next album, The Hope Etudes, in 2024.
