Fred Hamilton

Fred Hamilton is an improvising musician and professor at the University of North Texas.

About Me

Fred Hamilton is an improviser. He is a guitarist and bassist, a composer, author and a Professor of Music in the Jazz Studies Division of the University of North Texas.

He has performed concerts and presented workshops throughout the U.S, Canada, and has appeared in Sweden, South Korea and India. Recent highlights include concerts and a recording project with the legendary santoor maestro Tarun Bhattacharya in Calcutta in January 2009, a concert in Seoul, Korea in December 2007, which was broadcast in Korea on EBS (Educational Broadcasting System) and the Ear Shot Festival in Seattle in November 2005. Many workshops have been presented in the U.S. including recent ones at the University of Washington, University of Southern California, the University of Oklahoma, Wichita State University, Emporia State University, the University of Colorado, Capital University and McNally Smith College. He performs and teaches every summer at the Jamey Aebersold Workshop held at the University of Louisville.

Fred has published magazine articles in Guitar Player, compositions for big band, small group and guitar ensemble with the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press, books with Mel Bay Publications, and co-authored Rhythm Section Workshop for Jazz Directors, published by Alfred Publishing Co.

He has recorded with a variety of international jazz artists including Tim Hagens, Art Lande, Paul McCandless, Kenny Wheeler, Marc Seales, Spike Robinson, David Friesen, Shelly Berg, Ed Soph, Woody Witt and the Earl Harvin Trio.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of North Texas in 1989, he held full time teaching positions at Concordia College in Montreal, St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Bowling Green State University in Ohio and was a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Northern Colorado where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in composition. He was a member of the NORAD Command Band while in the U.S. Air Force, studied guitar with Jim Atkins in Denver, Colorado and has been playing professionally since high school.
