Vocalist Candice Hoyes debuts with album of rare Ellington songs, "On a Turquoise Cloud"

About Me

Candice Hoyes possesses a voice full of grace and expression, tapping her classical and jazz influences to render a vocal style all her own. In March 2015, Hoyes released her debut album, On a Turquoise Cloud, which San Francisco Chronicle calls “a beautiful interpretation of rarely performed Duke Ellington songs.” With a vibrant contrast of songs that span Ellington’s career, On a Turquoise Cloud features new arrangements and performances by this generation’s jazz luminaries. She also penned lyrics for two of the songs.

Her recent work with Jazz at Lincoln Center marked an artistic turning point, and the catalyst for this project. Hoyes teamed with acclaimed producer Ulysses Owens Jr., and every arrangement on On a Turquoise Cloud was tailor made for her by distinguished artists, a list that includes Ulysses Owens Jr., Ted Nash, Vincent Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, Kenny Rampton, and Adam Birnbaum.

Hoyes attended Harvard College, where she won the Fitzie Prize, providing her voice lessons at Boston Conservatory. She subsequently was selected for vocal training in Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival for Young Artists in Opera. She has a Masters in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, and has led education outreach and presentations across the US, including most recently at University of California at Berkeley.

Her upcoming appearances include the 2015 BET EXPERIENCE PRESENTED BY COCA- COLA® Kick-Off Concert as the opening act for Deborah Cox, Chrisette Michele, and Jordin Sparks, and performances at NYC’s Minton’s Harlem and WhyNot? Jazz Room.
