About the Album

“Manic” was born near the end of a very tumultuous relationship with a woman who was bi-polar. Her desires and tastes diverged as widely as her moods, which is why we pay reference to both “You Are My Sunshine” and Swedish death metal. Chris Bacas on the “shredding electric guitar” solo. As a whole, Pyramid Scheme boldly highlights Sanford’s strengths as an arranger—his ability to develop ideas that transport the material so that the listener doesn’t hear the same thing in exactly the same way, and his penchant for drawing on diverse styles of music while keeping open the connection to improvised jazz. What makes Triocracy notable beyond the individual qualities of each player is the seamless integration of composition and improvisation. On many of the titles, it’s difficult to determine with certainty where the written portion ends and the improvisation begins. Often the improvisation grows directly from the arranged material, subtly unfolding one voice at a time. This maturity and discipline of the soloists to perform within the context of each tune, despite drawing from such a broad variety of material, allows Triocracy to create a cohesive statement from start to finish.
