Yuhan Su: Flying Alone

The vibraphone has experienced a resurgence in recent years, with numerous talented musicians drawing the spotlight to the instrument. Taiwanese vibraphonist Yuhan Su is another notable exponent. Su moved to the United States in 2008 and studied at Berklee under vibraphone players Dave Samuels and Ed Saindon and marimba player Nancy Zeltsman. Her debut as leader impresses on a number of levels, not the least of which is because these sophisticated compositions command the attention throughout the generous 73 minutes.

Vibraphonist Yuhan Su's debut album Flying Alone is a collection of ten elegant and sophisticated originals that unfold like poems for multiple voices. Her effective yet subtle leadership of her international band allows the instruments to echo and support each other in haunting choruses and contemplative dialogues. Flying Alone is Taiwanese vibraphonist Yuhan Su's debut, a 2011 Berklee College of Music graduate who put together an international band to record the album in March 2012. As well as vibraphone, Su plays malletkat, and sings on two tracks.
