Matthias Lupri: Same Time Twice

by Jim Santella
With a session of his original compositions, vibraphonist Matthias Lupri steers his quintet through modern mainstream adventures. His leading edge jazz pieces reflect a desire to harbor growth, while not losing sight of the tradition. With two mallets, Lupri enjoys the opportunity to maintain an enthusiastic rhythmic drive. When interpreting a slow ballad, such as You Just Never Know," his overlapping harmonic clouds simply roll by lazily, leaving dense colors in their wake. Most of the album, however, features ...

Matthias Lupri seemingly found his calling in life after being indoctrinated to the music of vibraphonist Gary Burton. A graduate of Boston's renowned Berklee School of Music, Lupri's finely honed craft shines in luminescent colors with his third release as a leader. He garners consummate support from the dynamic duo of saxophonist Mark Turner and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. Furthermore, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson display bounds of creativity atop a polyrhythmic attack.

by Jack Bowers
A melodically invigorating session consisting of nine largely easygoing compositions by the quartet's leader, German-born and American-raised vibraphonist Matthias Lupri. The album's title denotes one of Lupri's more prominent inspirations, the window in his Boston apartment through which he often gazes at the passing parade while composing. Through that window he sees Children," The Fruitlady," the masses whose faces he sees but whose Names" he doesn't know, or people who will Just Say Anything," and aspires to convert these and ...
