Lynne Arriale: Chimes of Freedom

Read "Chimes of Freedom" reviewed by Jim Worsley

Melodic intelligence and inner exploration are at the core of any Lynne Arriale recording. Chimes of Freedom is no exception. It does, however, have many moments which are exceptional. Once again featuring bassist Jasper Somsen and drummer E. J. Strickland, the record weighs in at a nourishing forty-five minutes of mood enhancement. Seven Arriale originals are the backbone of this ten-song project. Vocalist K. J. Denhert joins the ensemble for the final two tracks. The trio opens by ...

3x3: Piano Trios: February 2020

Read "3x3: Piano Trios: February 2020" reviewed by Geno Thackara

Lynne Arriale Trio Chimes of Freedom Challenge Records 2020 Where she last appeared happy and laughing on the cover of Give Us These Days (Challenge, 2018), Chimes of Freedom has Lynne Arriale looking a little more thoughtful and serious. The theme this time around is indeed a weighty one, but the sound isn't at all ponderous or overdone. It's a meditation on the state of American social issues and civil rights, both the recordings's ...

Lynne Arriale Trio: Give Us These Days

Read "Give Us These Days" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

When it comes to the art of the trio, pianist Lynne Arriale is always in her element. Over the past quarter century she's released two riveting handfuls of dates exploring this configuration, only rarely moving afield as on her plainly-titled previous release--Solo (Motema, 2012). Each one of those trio outings stands as its own distinctive work of art, unique in design and expression, yet all bear the hallmarks of a singular artistry, showcasing adept fingers and tremendous heart. This one ...

Lynne Arriale: Solo

Read "Solo" reviewed by Dave Sumner

Following up on her strong quartet album Convergence (Motema, 2011), pianist Lynne Arriale returns with a solo recording--a risky venture for any artist. In an ensemble setting, a musician has collaborators with whom to work and exchange ideas before the record button is punched, and more importantly, while the session is on the move. In ensemble play, a musician's unformed ideas or sound can be made whole by the other musicians in the ensemble; this is a big reason why ...

Lynne Arriale: Convergence

Read "Convergence" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff
