Kidd Jordan / Hamid Drake / William Parker: Palm Of Soul

by Nic Jones
A sense of ritual pervades this music, and these three masters show how potent a force it can be. The idea of evocation is a fraught one, however, especially when the result is more the evocation of others than the projection of a musical identity unique to the performer. At times here Kidd Jordan evokes the spirit of Albert Ayler, but this seems to be more coincidence than conscious intention, and perhaps it's only natural when the music is an ...

Hurricane Katrina left tenor saxophonist Kidd Jordan homeless less than a month before this recording session. Undeterred, the New Orleans native kept a prearranged studio date with bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake. Regularly joined by tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson for powerhouse quartet gigs, Jordan, Parker and Drake had never recorded before as a trio. Improvising collectively with no preset material, they settled into a meditative mood underscored by restless energy.
It would seem plausible that such ...

The digital revolution has been kind to some of jazz's unsung elders, and Edward Kidd" Jordan is tops among them. Small labels around the world are capturing and digitizing players who might not otherwise be gracing stereos, much less playing festivals, away from their native soil. Improvised music always is at its most exciting in a live setting. Of course the orthodox purists of free improvisation would argue that there is no point in fixing" a musical improvisation by recording it. They might say that the stamping of a CD takes the life out of a performance. I would argue that while live improvisation can be much more involving, it's also nice to be able to hear creative musicians jam in your living room at your ...

by Glenn Astarita
Recorded live at New York City's prestigious Vision Festival," three seminal leaders of the modern improvising circuit do their best to enliven our perceptions during this undeniably rousing set. The obvious mark of distinction here resides within Alan Silva's utilization of an orchestra synthesizer that seemingly features an array of wave formats, MIDI sequence files and patches. Silva could be utilizing an older synclavier model, yet the artist exudes a sound and approach that translates into a one-man symphony orchestra. ...
