Ivo Perelman and Nate Wooley: Polarity 3

by Hrayr Attarian
The stimulating Polarity 3 is the third installment in a series of spontaneous duets between innovative saxophonist Ivo Perelman and equally creative trumpeter Nate Wooley. On these 10 tracks, the two improvisers use silent pauses to craft haunting atmospheres and contemplative melodies. The performances are akin to two complimentary yet independent introspective musings. Languid, wistful tones from both men start off the opener One." The soft howls and undulating refrains are interspersed in the hypnotic quietude and thus ...

by Hrayr Attarian
For over three decades innovative saxophonist Ivo Perelman has been a stalwart of the creative music scene. Each addition to his impressive, and uniformly superb, discography is a unique expression of spontaneity that bears his indelible stylistic mark. One of the reasons for Perelman's success is his uncanny ability to find like-minded collaborators. The introspective Ephemeral Shapes is no exception in all of the above. An eight-part improvised suite finds Perelman in the company of two equally ingenious musicians: the ...

by Hrayr Attarian
Tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman is one of the most accomplished contemporary improvisers. The size of his output is only rivaled by the extent of his imagination. Violinist Gabby Fluke-Mogul is an intrepid innovator who, in a mere handful of years, has established themselves as a force with which to reckon. Both artists thrive in duet settings so their spontaneous set Joy, the second volume in Perelman's Duologues series, is seamlessly cohesive and quite stimulating. This nine-part suite starts ...

by Alberto Bazzurro

by Mark Corroto
There is an adage in the music world that one is damned to be a completist. Ever since performances have been captured on cylinders, records, and now digitally, music devotees have endeavored to collect entire catalogs of their favorite musicians or ensembles. Think about the obsessive hunters of 78 rpm blues records from backwoods artists of the 1920s and '30s, Dean Benedetti's obsessive capture of Charlie Parker solos and Phil Schaap's dedication to every bit of Bird's minutia. There are ...

New and old converge on Water Music. Tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman showcases a quartet with longstanding partner Matthew Shipp on piano together with the fresh rhythm axis of bassist Mark Helias and drummer Tom Rainey. Although they have not played with Perelman before, they are not exactly Johnny-come-latelys. Both have achieved veteran status, not only individually, but also as a team, exemplified by Rainey having fuelled Helias' mighty Open Loose trio since its inception back in the late 1990s.

by Hrayr Attarian
Innovative saxophonist Ivo Perelman thrives in small groups with like-minded musicians, as is amply demonstrated throughout his one-of-a-kind oeuvre. In drummer Tom Rainey, Perelman has found yet another perfect partner for shared improvisational explorations. The two men have complementary artistic visions as demonstrated by the superb Truth Seeker (Fundacja Słuchaj, 2024) with bassist Mark Helias. Similar ingenuity imbues their first duo recording, the provocative Duologues 1: Turning Point on Perelman's Ibeji label. The seven interlinked tracks form a ...
