Cecile McLorin Salvant: Oh Snap
by Frank Housh
It feels like Cecile McLorin Salvant is just showing off. The 2020 MacArthur Genius Grant Award Winner follows up Ghost Song (Nonesuch, 2022) and Mélusine (Nonesuch, 2023) with Oh Snap, a post-genre effort with deeply personal lyrics that sound like they were lifted from the diaries of a rediscovered poet. McLorin recorded Oh Snap alone, learning GarageBand and AutoTune as she went. She said, I felt I had lost a connection to music because it was something that ...
Continue ReadingNew music with Chronojazz, Mr Motaba, Marl Lettieri, Casiopea, Ghost Rhythms and more

Today on Bitches Brew Radio--direct from Melbourne, Australia--we're serving up a full lineup of brand-new global releases in the world of progressive jazz, fusion, and beyond. We kick things off with Chronojazz, the latest from London-based guitarist Ross Lardner, whose Holdsworth-inspired phrasing sets the tone for a night of sonic exploration. by Mike Jacobs
Canadian bassist Chris Tarry released his last album, Rest of the Story (Nineteen Eight, 2011) as a CD / book hybrid before effectively exiting music to become a full-time writer. As the title track shows, he is an uncommonly talented composer as well as a fine bassist. Hopefully it won't be the last musical endeavor heard from Mr. Tarry. Featuring Pete McCann, Dan Weiss, Henry Hey and Kelly Jefferson. ...
Continue ReadingPat Thomas: Sufi Women
by Fran Kursztejn
Virtuoso pianist Pat Thomas released one of the finest (and most frustrating) solo performances of this decade with 2024's The Solar Model of Ibn Al-Shatir (Otoroku), and follows with a no-less important, intimate coda in Sufi Women. Dedicated," as Thomas proclaims, to the remarkable contribution of Sufi women in the spiritual science...known as Sufism (Islamic mysticism) in the west," the record is fittingly a strange, multidimensional collection of ecosystems, torn from the physical jumbling of the keys to the metaphysical ...
Continue ReadingBerklee Indian Ensemble featuring Shankar Mahadevan: Five Peace Band
by Mike Jacobs
From December 2016, the uber-talented Berklee Indian Ensemble takes on the John McLaughlin composition Five Peace Band" with Shakti's master vocalist, Shankar Mahadevan presiding. Among many other things, the staggeringly tight voice/guitar, voice/violin unison lines, and improvisations will likely have you questioning if these are students or masters--or both. (The answer is yes.) ...
Continue ReadingRichard Guba: Songs for Stuffed Animals
by Richard J Salvucci
Ok, admittedly, the title is not going to attract many rational listeners. As one understands, the Songs for Stuffed Animals is explained by a band performing tunes for stuffed animals that accompany children during a busy day. Ok. That may well be the case, but the local stuffed animals are not saying. There are quite a few of them, grateful reminders of past times, and one or two which occasionally still offer solace in this certifiably insane world. So, there ...
Continue ReadingDonny McCaslin: From Stadium Jazz To Lost Lullabies
by Lawrence Peryer
Today, the Spotlight shines on saxophonist Donny McCaslin. Donny's new album, Lullaby for the Lost (Edition Records), is out now, and what a record it is. It's Donny's saxophone with guitar-driven rock energy, drawing from influences like Neil Young and Nine Inch Nails, resulting in what Donny calls his most personal music to date. Many know Donny from his pivotal role on David Bowie's final album Blackstar. This latest work demonstrates what may have drawn Bowie ...

Everything comes together for Michael Dease and company on Flow, which should be no surprise but mustn't be taken for granted. The dynamic Mr. Dease, a consummate musician, sweeps his diverse crew of long-term collaborators and gifted newcomers through a confluence of songs rich in melody, rhythm and feeling. Pleasure-forward, Flow entices, refreshes, buoys and inspires. The album--Dease's 18th as a leader since 2005 and his 11th from Posi-Tone, all imbued with joyful engagement and flaunting stylistic variety--covers ...
