Laila Biali is an award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist whose recording Wintersongs offers an immersive journey into the delicate beauty and serene power of winter all through the lens of her jazz and classical roots. With two exceptions, all tracks were composed by Biali in a cabin surrounded by snow-capped mountains in the heart of Canada's Rocky Mountains. Jeff Kaiser & Paul L. Botelho: Dome

Botelho and avant-garde trumpeter/educator Jeff Kaiser push against the boundaries of conventional sound, creating an experience that redefines the relationship between voice and brass. The marketing text for this album states: “What you hear is voice, trumpet, space, and environment." Indeed, each component is a vital participant. This is an EP ...

Finn Carter Quartet: Hymn for My Dad

Read "Hymn for My Dad" reviewed by Neil Duggan

From working as a cloakroom attendant at Ronnie Scott's in London to performing on the club stage to a sellout audience with one's own quartet is quite a journey. It might sound like a corny plot from a TV series, but since playing their first show in 2021, Finn Carter and his quartet have gone from strength to strength with a string of sold-out shows, including playing the main show at the venerated Ronnie Scott's and headlining the Brick Lane ...

Next to Silence: Ruh

Read "Ruh" reviewed by Nenad Georgievski

Ruh marks the highly anticipated return of Macedonian jazz band Next to Silence, arriving at a pivotal moment of reflection and renewal. The album is deeply shaped by the loss of one of the band's founding members, trumpeter Aleksandar Nikolovski (Grobi), who tragically passed away from cancer in 2021. Grobi's presence was integral to the band's unique sound. His performance at the Prilep Jazz Festival in 2020, showcased Grobi's and the band's emotionally charged and technically brilliant music.
