Jon Gordon: 7th Ave South

Read "7th Ave South" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Some of life's moments, even when buried in the past, remain almost as fresh and memorable as today's. Such is alto saxophonist Jon Gordon's memory of his first visit to New York City's then-jazz center, Greenwich Village's 7th Avenue South, which was “the first place [he] ever heard live jazz in New York." That was in 1983--nearly four decades ago--but that memory and those that followed were enough to inspire Gordon's latest album, appropriately titled 7th Ave South.

Elisabeth Harnik / Zlatko Kaučič: One Foot In The Air

Read "One Foot In The Air" reviewed by John Sharpe

Most jazz lovers will likely remember an occasion when the musicians played as if their lives depended on it to an almost empty room. Judging from the applause, the audience on 14 June 2022 at Kulturhalle Eggersdorf in Austria was not the biggest, but those present were lucky enough to witness a veritable feast of improvised music. Doing the honors were Austrian pianist Elisabeth Harnik and Slovenian percussionist Zlatko Kaučič. Although a respected composer Harnik is also a fearless improviser, ...

Delia Fischer: Beyond Bossa

Read "Beyond Bossa" reviewed by Katchie Cartwright

An intriguingly multi-layered project, Beyond Bossa has unfolded over a number of years. The “beyond" in the title points in a few directions. A pianist, composer-arranger, singer (and dancer), Delia Fischer works across idioms: bossa nova, jazz, música popular brasileira (MPB), various types of Brazilian music, theater. Her recordings have earned her Latin Grammy nominations for Best Brazilian Album (MPB) in 2021 (H.O.J.E., Labidad Produções) and 2019 (Tempo Minimo, Labidad Produções). Further extending the boundaries, she called upon a far-flung ...

Sabino de Bari: Ashanti

After joining with vocalist Diana Torti for their 2023 duo release, It's All We Have, guitarist Sabino de Bari is back with an ensemble of his own on Ashanti, an enchanting album of tunes centered on the themes of rootlessness and wandering. Jazzed in the Mouse House

Read "Jazzed in the Mouse House" reviewed by Patrick Burnette

Jazz has gone some pretty wacky places--Russia, South America, the White House--but believe it or not, sometimes it even invades that princess-industrial complex we know and love as the Disney corporation. Listen and learn as Mike leads us deep into this heart of darkness and we see how a rainbow of different jazz artists come to terms with the musical productions of that most profit-driven rodent of them all.
