Album Description

A few years after the release of "Trieste Early Jazz Orchestra Live In Rimini" comes this second live CD with, as the title suggests, the intention of paying tribute to the club which was indisputably the centre of New York's jazz scene from 1923 to 1936. The Cotton Club, located at the intersection of 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue, in the district of Harlem, was immensely active, hosting the best musicians of the time, such as Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson with their orchestras, crooners and dancers. It can well be said that there was no major black artist of the time who did not perform at the Cotton Club, where the rule was: solely black performers on the stage and solely white guests in the audience (with extremely rare exceptions). The pieces chosen for this CD are intended to represent a cross section of the music played, sung and danced at the Cotton Club. Yes: danced! Towards the end of the last track, "Happy Feet", we can hear the rhythmic tap dancing of Michela Bianco's young 'Tutappinini". Whilst in the majority of the tracks it is the orchestra to dominate, here and there the crooner of yesteryear appears, essentially an ectoplasm reincarnated for the three minutes afforded him by the disc. Be it his light-hearted "You're The Cream In My Coffee" or the intense "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?", Paolo Venier takes us back to that distant atmosphere where hair-grooming cream and silk stockings went perfectly hand in hand.
