Album Description
Moritz Stahl has been dreaming! Of a music in which he could express himself more freely. The dream has come true! "Traumsequenz" is the saxophonist's first album as a bandleader. Moritz Stahl, born in 1991, grew up in the Swabian town of Bobingen and is known in the Bavarian and German jazz scene as a member of the Jazzrausch Bigband, as a saxophonist in the Philipp Schiepek Quartet and the Luca Zambito Quartet, as well as in singer Fiona Grond's trio. In 2022, he made plans to appear as a bandleader. With drummer Leif Berger, from the Cologne scene, pianist Julius Windisch, active in Berlin, bassist Lorenz Heigenhuber, who comes from Bavaria and lives in Leipzig, and guitarist Philipp Schiepek, a long-time musical companion of Moritz Stahl, the saxophonist has found his dream line-up. The album "Traumsequenz" fascinates throughout in terms of sound and design. Filigree tones of the nylon string guitar meet dense weaves of piano and bass, while the drums oscillate between free-flowing cloudiness and drive-giving accents. At no point is "Traumsequenz" cautious. Free from common clichés, the quintet explores the boundaries of harmony, polyrhythm, space and time in Stahl's compositions without sacrificing accessibility or losing focus. All five participants embark on the uncertain journey through Moritz Stahl's compositions and he himself takes up space as a soloist, but also leaves room to breathe in many places. His rich, multi-faceted saxophone tone is present, but never dominant. The saxophonist or any other participant is never intent on effect, the music develops a passionate pull in rhythmic and harmonic terms. It is also an invitation to the audience to engage with the music in an open-minded way, to leave questions unanswered from time to time and thus allow scope for individual development of the experience. This is not the hasty debut work of an up-and-coming talent; "Traumsequenz" features well thought-out and polished music by a musician on a par with the greats of international jazz today. This album is a statement by a bandleader who has found his way and his way of expressing himself, but who continues to search in a self-confident manner. Keep dreaming Moritz Stahl, great music will come out of it!
