One evening, during a family trip, my sons asked me before bed why I always play such sad melodies. We started talking about the tradition of singing lullabies to children and wondering why they’re usually so calm and melancholic. In the end, I played them a medley of cheerful standards from the rock and jazz repertoire — like Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds and Sonny Rollins’ St. Thomas. They fell asleep quickly and in good spirits. Room 447 is a continuation of that conversation, which came back to us after we returned from the trip.
