Album Description

The Burchfield-Vituri Project presents its debut album, Metonímia, an eclectic collection of compositions and arrangements that intertwine modern jazz with Brazilian harmony and rhythm. Metonímia documents the ongoing collaborations between Tyler Burchfield on tenor sax and clarinet and Pedro Vituri on electric and acoustic guitars. The eight-track album serves as a vehicle for Burchfield and Vituri’s varied musical influences, with each of them contributing three original compositions, while offering fresh takes on some of their favorite Brazilian repertoire in the remaining two tracks. The title, Metonímia, or ‘metonymy,’ Greek for ‘beyond the name,’ illustrates a critical attitude towards an enclosing of jazz and Brazilian music and proposes a fluid continuity between genres. Compositionally, this is particularly reflected in the aesthetic choices the pair makes by mixing both cultural backgrounds seamlessly and unboxing them, paying homage to composers and performers that represent those traditions to do so. Burchfield gives a nod to samba singer Elza Soares’ latest work in the fiery, percussive “Pra Elza,” while Vituri reflects on Moacir Santos’ counterpoints in “Valsa Pro Moaça” and puts forth a jocular blues in reference to Thelonious Monk and Andrew Hill. The rhythms, harmonies, and textures illustrate the band’s diverse palate, also drawing from funk, rock and roll, and free music. With a versatile lineup that threads between jazz and chamber ensemble, the duo effectively showcases their writing as well as the group’s dynamic interpretation of the music.
