pianoAlbum Description
This is the music of HORNS OF HOPE. Aimee-Jo Benoit’s sophomore release explores the grief process, with words and sounds that reveal the human experience and how we use music get through it. While the subject explores the distance between our lightest and darkest moments, the music itself is meant to work as a catharsis. It was recorded over 3 days in November 2022 at OCL Studios in Langdon, AB. The title HORNS OF HOPE was brought on while contemplating the philosophical phrase, “the horns of the dilemma’. Because hope exists in duality, we can not be hopeful without the existence of struggle, pain, and loss. We must accept the duality of our existence, be present in it when possible, and listen for the signs. The album’s 8 tracks are all Canadian, featuring compositions by Sarah Harmer, Joni Mitchell, Daniel Lanois, Leonard Cohen, Kathleen Edwards and K.D Lang, with arrangements by Calgary’s Carsten Rubeling. This is not an unusual course for the bandleaders, Benoit and Rubeling, whose previous Canadian explorations together in the Both Sides Now Ensemble is what sparked this new collaborative project. HORNS OF HOPE also includes Benoit’s first original composition entitled “Free.” The New Assembly members are: Carsten Rubeling on Trombone, Mark DeJong on Tenor Saxophone and Bass Clarinet, Andre Wickenheiser on Trumpet, Mark Limacher on Piano and Fender Rhodes, Dan Gaucher on Drums and Jon Wielebnowski on Bass. These musicians, educators and collaborators bring a wealth of experience from rich backgrounds in performance within the jazz genre giving The New Assembly its unique voice.
