The disc offers imaginative interpretations of classics by the maestro and a fresh focus on Duke’s esteemed collaborators Billy Strayhorn, Juan Tizol and Mercer Ellington. Bloom and Funkhouser take the listener on a mesmerizing journey from up-tempo swing through lush ballads, from the exoticism of Caravan and Isfahan to the high-energy exploits of Cottontail and Jump for Joy. The selections are artfully chosen, the pacing is excellent. The duo’s long collaboration is evident in playing that is expansive and inventive, yet elegant and cohesive.
