Saxophonist Dexter Gordon records the influential hard
bop album Biting the Apple (Steeplechase) shortly before returning to the United
States to great acclaim and making the double-LP
Homecoming: Live at the Village Vanguard (Columbia).
Improvising guitarist George Benson records Breezin' (Warner), which goes to #1
on the pop charts.
Trumpeter Bobby Hackett dies on June 7.
