teacher is somewhat appropriately named Mrs. Clinkscales.
Alto saxophone great and Ellington band member Johnny Hodges is born
in Cambridge, Massachesetts on July 25.
Clarinetist and Ellington band member Barney Bigard is born in New
Orleans, Lousiania on March 3. Bigard and Sidney Bechet will
eventually introduce the Duke to true Jazz.
Saxophonist Bud Freeman is born on April 13.
Cornetist and key Dixieland figure Wild Bill Davison is born
in Defiance, Ohio on January 5.
Trumpeter Frankie Newton born in Emory, VA.
