About this image
When I returned from the tour with Paul Bley, almost immediately I had a tour with Nils Økland and Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen. The music was something else. Not so much grandiose soloing, but a total band effort, songs, vocals, with everyone singing, including myself, the music came together very quickly. The audience were astounded. We performed in Roscrea, where my cousins went to school, in the Castle, to a capacity audience, having just come from touring Europe in the Paul Bley Trio, it was superlative, even the chap that ran the event, put his card in my pocket after the gig, got anything like this again, do let us know. The music featured hardanger fiddle, trap drums/percussion/sampling/processing and guitar (clean and processed for ambience). We mixed straight ahead folk with ambient interludes. When we got to Cork, I couldn't believe it, there was a full house and they turned away pretty much what they had seated. After the concert, I was told that the COH would now be promoting my concerts, it was quite unbelievable. I ended up with my name on lights on Cork Opera House, no nepotism, no cashing in the Cillian Murphy chip, just great music and full house. Rapid arco violin arpeggios, in juxtaposition to ambient guitar, processed vocalisation and sampling. There all doing it now, but I remember having a chat with Nils about it in the Long Valley in Cork over a mean sandwich and a pint of Guinness and he was laughing hysterically when I tried to elucidate on the music conception, after Roscrea and just before Cork, he was shaking my hand. Nils has since become a star.. But Nils, takk!
