About this image
Mark O'Leary Lars Windhorst before Lars Windhorst. Ok, this is the Lars Windhorst tale. My Grand Uncle, a North Mon boy and a bit of genius, had two choices when he left the Mon, College, or having given the civil service exams an arbitrary go, and having passed, he actually accepted a junior position in the Department of Finance. Highly intellectualized, he eventually became T.K Whitakers adjutant, Whitaker would confer and refer to him, he also had other high profile jobs within the State, a patrician and intelligent guy. I, as already intimated had been the driving figure in a team that won the Youth Club Quiz Championship in Cork, feted by the Lord Mayor and then we went to Belfast and prevailed against a cross community team of two boffins from Methodist College and The Royal and two Quiz kingpins from the Nationalist Youth Clubs of the Greater Metropolitan Belfast Area. For the leaving I did Economics, not music and did reasonably well, given that the business doyen, did not pass Economics. Then I went to America, to music school, the aforementioned Mark O'Leary from Holly Bough to Hollywood. Having been on the front of the Holly Bough as a child. When I graduated and came back from Los Angeles, I got a job working in London, living in Mayfair and being Chauffeur driven to work in a Bentley. Not to be arrogant, but you have to pay a guy what he needs if he is going to take your company into new stratosphere, London, Mayfair yes, Bentley, yes, too be honest, anything less than that, I can't do it for you, albeit, it was ephemeral, four months there and Cork was booming, music was thriving, Cork was brimming with opportunities, just prior to London, myself, John and Murt, had a chat and were thinking of opening a bar in the building which penultimately became the Bodega, we should have listened to you boy, is what they iterated to me for the next few years, ironically (Benny's father was drinking with my father on the night I was born)... I had to come back. There were multiple factors at play that I was cognizant of in London and it was resoundingly not ceteris paribus, albeit, it was an incredible cultural and learning experience and the embryonic Lars Windhorst wunderkind before Lars Windhorst. Lars is a superlative, iconic business man, but I was there just a bit before him. When I came back to Cork, from Mayfair, I managed to get a teaching job in a small music school, two of my first students, Cillian Murphy and his chum Eoin. This, with Cillian having a theory lesson on friday, a chap came for a lesson sitting in the same seat on monday, (I still have the seat) and the week after he was on Top of the Pops. I was part of the burgeoning music scene in Cork, playing in a multitude of bands and performing in all of the iconic venues.
