About this image

New Orleans based educator, jazz saxophonist and Big Chief Donald Harrison, Jr. continues the tradition of the Mardi Gras Indian culture performing on the WWOZ Jazz Tent stage at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival at the New Orleans Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, 24 April 2009. The tradition of the Mardi Gras Indian culture can be traced back to the early 1700's in New Orleans, and today, elaborate costumes are handmade while this culture still continues today. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival celebrates it's 40th Anniversary this year with 12 different stages in an annual 10-day cultural event that encompasses every style associated with the city of New Orleans including jazz, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, blues, R&B, rock, funk, African, Latin, Caribbean, folk, and much more in addition to local cuisine, arts, and crafts.
