Freeman Lee, bebop trumpeter and pianist from the 1950s, on the campus of the oldest Historically Black University in the United States, founded in 1856, 7 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. It was home to Wilberforce Collegians, a college band which boasts Ben Webster, George Russell, Snooky Young, Frank Foster, Benny Carter among alumni.
