About this image

20 Jun 1939, Baltimore, Maryland, USA --- Original caption: Some of the ten thousand mourners who crowded outside the Waters African Methodist Church, Baltimore, Maryland, are packed tightly together as Chick Webb, Negro swing band leader, is carried from the church to a waiting hearse. Two squads of police and volunteers restored order when the mourners became riotous in attempting to get inside the church for the funeral rites. Webb, acclaimed Harlem's "King of Swing," died at Johns Hopkins Hospital last week after an operation for a kidney ailment. --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
