Westchester, NY -- The Westchester Jazz Orchestra has been called a “local" orchestra “in about the same way as, say, the New York or Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras are local." On Saturday, September 20, this world-class big band will begin their sixth season celebrating Hard Bop at 8 PM at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main Street, Irvington, NY. Spearheaded by Horace Silver, Nat Adderley, Art Blakey and others, Hard Bop is a hard-driving and bluesy style that developed from bebop and returned a strong gospel influence to jazz. WJO was propelled to national recognition recently as its debut CD, All In, was named among the Best CDs of 2007 by JazzImprov magazine and the Montreal Gazette and was one of WBGO's Top Picks from December 2007 through April 2008. All In was also one of the most frequently played jazz CDs in the nation last spring, enjoyed a 13-week run on the JazzWeek chart, a weekly account of the top 50 jazz CDs played by radio stations nationwide. WJO's CD peaked at number 4 on the JazzWeek chart of March 10.
WJO will perform four additional season concerts during 2008-09: (1)Time Out: The Music of Dave Brubeck on November 15, (2) Jazz Masters: The Music of Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter with special guest John Patitucci on January 31, (3) Jazz Goes to the Movies on April 18, and (4) Americana on June 6.
Led by Artistic Director Mike Holober, WJO musicians include trumpeters Craig Johnson, Tony Kadleck, Jim Rotondi and Marvin Stamm; saxophonists Jay Brandford, David Brandom, Ralph Lalama, Jason Rigby and Ed Xiques; trombonists Bruce Eidem, Larry Farrell, George Flynn, and Keith O'Quinn; pianist Ted Rosenthal; bassist Harvie S and drummer Andy Watson.
WJO's concerts are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Westchester Arts Council and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
